Celebrating 25 years of restoration, Easton Walled Gardens’ September Art Month invites visitors to explore their creativity through workshops, demonstrations and days spent painting in the landscape. With abundant late-summer colour, historic architecture and sweeping views, the gardens offer inspiration for artists of every ability. Curated by Monty Cholmeley, Art Month at Easton Walled Gardens begins on 6 September with a Botanical Illustration Workshop, using the garden’s flowers and foliage as inspiration. Dramatic dahlias, airy cosmos, zinnias and salvias will provide plenty of colourful subjects.

Those taking their first steps with paint can join a Beginner Watercolour Workshop on 9 September, followed by a Drawing Workshop on 10 September, offering another opportunity to develop creative and observational skills in Easton’s beautiful surroundings.

On 16 September, artists can take their easels outdoors for a Plein Air Painting Day. Possible viewpoints range from the flower-filled Pickery and White Garden to the Rose Meadow, historic Gatehouse and the broad landscape below the Cottage Garden.

A highlight of the programme is the Wallace Seymour Weekend on 19–20 September. Yorkshire paint makers Rebecca Wallace and Pip Seymour will introduce participants to their artisan watercolours, gouache, oils, acrylics, inks and drawing materials. The hands-on weekend includes technical guidance, colour-mixing demonstrations and the chance to discover how bespoke paints are created from raw pigments.

The programme concludes with a Block Printing Workshop on 26 September, inviting visitors to experiment with pattern, colour and traditional printmaking techniques.

Throughout the month, visitors can browse the art materials and stationery selected by Monty Cholmeley for Griffin of Easton, the estate’s courtyard art shop. They can also bring their own materials, hire Meadow Retreat for a peaceful painting day or extend their creative escape with a stay in one of Easton’s historic cottages. 

While you are there, you can also enjoy the lovely cafe on site. The Courtyard has also become a destination in its own right, with its cobbled seating area, relaxed café and carefully curated shops encouraging visitors to linger and it can be enjoyed even when you are not also visiting the gardens (so there is no entrance fee). Coffee and homemade cake can be enjoyed indoors among shelves of books or outside in the sunshine, while visitors browse plants, gifts, gardening accessories and Easton’s incredible own collection of sweet pea seeds.

Whether visiting for floral inspiration, for an art class, a peaceful stroll, lunch in The Courtyard or simply an hour away from the pace of modern life, Easton Walled Gardens remains one of those special places people find themselves returning to again and again.
