As summer settles over the Lincolnshire countryside and sweet pea season approaches its peak, Easton Walled Gardens is once again glorious with colour and scent. From fragrant flowers, romantic borders and peaceful walks to coffee and shopping for gift items, stationery and art materials in The Courtyard, plus summer events, it remains one of the loveliest places in the region to slow down and enjoy the season
Today the gardens unfold as a series of beautifully designed spaces connected by winding paths, clipped hedges and softly abundant planting. Early in the year come snowdrops and hellebores, followed by tulips, roses and generous summer borders, but for many visitors it is sweet pea season that remains the true highlight.
Easton has long been associated with sweet peas, with archive photographs showing them growing prolifically around the original house in the early 1900s. Today more than 40 varieties flower through late June and July in shades ranging from delicate pastels to rich velvety tones, filling the gardens with colour and scent.
Part of Easton’s charm lies in its atmosphere. Although carefully designed and maintained, the gardens never feel overly formal. Grasses sway softly through the borders, pathways curve gently through the planting and there are quiet corners everywhere inviting visitors to pause awhile and simply enjoy the surroundings.
The Courtyard has also become a destination in its own right, with its cobbled seating area, relaxed café and carefully curated shops encouraging visitors to linger and it can be enjoyed even when you are not also visiting the gardens (so there is no entrance fee). Coffee and homemade cake can be enjoyed indoors among shelves of books or outside in the sunshine, while visitors browse plants, gifts, gardening accessories and Easton’s incredible own collection of sweet pea seeds.
Creativity and craftsmanship are woven throughout Easton too. Griffin of Easton, the beautifully curated art and stationery shop run by Ursula’s son, Monty Cholmeley, has become a favourite destination for artists, writers and anyone drawn to slower, more tactile pleasures. Workshops and seasonal events run throughout the year, from yoga sessions in the gardens to summer gatherings with pets and creative workshops. Yet even on an ordinary weekday morning, Easton retains a rare sense of calm.
Whether visiting for the sweet peas, a peaceful stroll, lunch in The Courtyard or simply an hour away from the pace of modern life, Easton Walled Gardens remains one of those special places people find themselves returning to again and again.
